Description

Definition of Surat Al Baqara

Surat Al Baqara is the longest Surah in the holy Quran, and it is the second Surah in the holy book. The number of its verses is 286, and it contains 6144 words and 25613 letters. The reason behind this name is the inclusion of the story of the cow that took place during the time of the prophet Musa PBUH, as he was asked to use his divine revelation to show the Israelites who killed one of their own, and Allah asked Musa to order his people to slaughter a cow and to hit with a part of it the dead person in to come back to life and tell about his killer himself.

Reasons of its descent

It is not possible to talk about the reasons for the descent of Surat Al Baqara as a whole, because its verses descended in different time frames. The 14th verse: And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe", descended in Abdullah Bin Ubay and his companions when they met the companions of Muhammad PBUH as he said: “Look how these foolish people responded in your place”, so he went and took the hand of Abou Bakr, Omar Ibn Al Khattab and Ali Ibn Abi Taleb and he praised them, and this verse descended when they told our prophet PBUH about this. In the 26th verse: “Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it”, and this verse descended because of the hypocrites who said that Allah is greater than hitting the examples with the one who burns the fire and the plagues from heaven. Also, the verse 204: “And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life”, was descended because of Al Akhnas Ibn Sharik who came to the prophet and was shown the Islam, that impressed him, and as he came out, he burned the seeds of the Muslims and he sterilized the donkeys.

Its content

Surat Al Baqara contains multiple contents, most of which revolve around the issue of land division, and the importance of using Allah’s approach to deal with this issue. There is also a talk about the types of people, from righteous, disbelievers to hypocrites. In this regard, the Surah exposes the repeated errors of the Israelites and the graces given to them by Allah. Also, there is a call towards spending for the sake of Allah and a severe campaign against the Riba users, and it includes various stories with lessons and morals such as the story of humanity through Adam and Eve, the story of the resurrection of the dead through Ibrahim PBUH, etc.

Its features

One of its features is that it is the longest Surah in the Quran, and it includes 1000 orders, 1000 prohibitions, 1000 rulings and 1000 story. Also, it contains the greatest verse of the holy Quran, Ayat Al Kursi, and it also has the longest verse in the Quran, which is the 282 verse, Ayat Al Din. The middle verse 143 says: "And thus we have made you a just community", and it was also said that the verse 281: "And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be treated unjustly", is the last verse to ever descend.

Its advantage

Surat Al Baqara has many virtues mentioned in a number of the prophetic Hadeeth. It is worth mentioning, for example, that reading them expels the demons because the Holy Prophet said: Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Baqara is recited. Reading it helps us get the intercession of our prophet, as he said PBUH: " Recite the two bright ones, al-Baqara and Surah Al 'Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them". Also, it is a reason to fight magic and sorcery according to our prophet’s saying: "Recite Surah al-Baqara, for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it".
