Read Surat Al-Qalam with Tafsir and Translation

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

ن وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ [١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe,

Verse number: 1

مَا أَنْتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ [٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.

Verse number: 2

وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ [٣]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.

Verse number: 3

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ [٤]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

Verse number: 4

فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ [٥]

Translation: English - Sahih International

So you will see and they will see

Verse number: 5

بِأَيْيِكُمُ الْمَفْتُونُ [٦]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].

Verse number: 6

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ [٧]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

Verse number: 7

فَلَا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ [٨]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Then do not obey the deniers.

Verse number: 8

وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ [٩]

Translation: English - Sahih International

They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].

Verse number: 9

وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَهِينٍ [١٠]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer

Verse number: 10

هَمَّازٍ مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ [١١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -

Verse number: 11

مَنَّاعٍ لِلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ [١٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,

Verse number: 12

عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ [١٣]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.

Verse number: 13

أَنْ كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ [١٤]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,

Verse number: 14

إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ [١٥]

Translation: English - Sahih International

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."

Verse number: 15

سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ [١٦]

Translation: English - Sahih International

We will brand him upon the snout.

Verse number: 16

إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ [١٧]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

Verse number: 17

وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ [١٨]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Without making exception.

Verse number: 18

فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِنْ رَبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ [١٩]

Translation: English - Sahih International

So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.

Verse number: 19

فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ [٢٠]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And it became as though reaped.

Verse number: 20

فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِينَ [٢١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And they called one another at morning,

Verse number: 21

أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَارِمِينَ [٢٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."

Verse number: 22

فَانْطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَافَتُونَ [٢٣]

Translation: English - Sahih International

So they set out, while lowering their voices,

Verse number: 23

أَنْ لَا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِسْكِينٌ [٢٤]

Translation: English - Sahih International

[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."

Verse number: 24

وَغَدَوْا عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ [٢٥]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.

Verse number: 25

فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوا إِنَّا لَضَالُّونَ [٢٦]

Translation: English - Sahih International

But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;

Verse number: 26

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ [٢٧]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Rather, we have been deprived."

Verse number: 27

قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُلْ لَكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ [٢٨]

Translation: English - Sahih International

The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [ Allah ]?' "

Verse number: 28

قَالُوا سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ [٢٩]

Translation: English - Sahih International

They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."

Verse number: 29

فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَلَاوَمُونَ [٣٠]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Then they approached one another, blaming each other.

Verse number: 30

قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا طَاغِينَ [٣١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.

Verse number: 31

عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَا أَنْ يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَاغِبُونَ [٣٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."

Verse number: 32

كَذَٰلِكَ الْعَذَابُ وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ [٣٣]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.

Verse number: 33

إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ [٣٤]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.

Verse number: 34

أَفَنَجْعَلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَالْمُجْرِمِينَ [٣٥]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?

Verse number: 35

مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ [٣٦]

Translation: English - Sahih International

What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?

Verse number: 36

أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَابٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ [٣٧]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Or do you have a scripture in which you learn

Verse number: 37

إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ [٣٨]

Translation: English - Sahih International

That indeed for you is whatever you choose?

Verse number: 38

أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَانٌ عَلَيْنَا بَالِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ [٣٩]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?

Verse number: 39

سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ [٤٠]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.

Verse number: 40

أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا بِشُرَكَائِهِمْ إِنْ كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ [٤١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.

Verse number: 41

يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَنْ سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ [٤٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but the disbelievers will not be able,

Verse number: 42

خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ وَقَدْ كَانُوا يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَالِمُونَ [٤٣]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.

Verse number: 43

فَذَرْنِي وَمَنْ يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمْ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ [٤٤]

Translation: English - Sahih International

So leave Me, [O Muhammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies the Qur'an. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.

Verse number: 44

وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ [٤٥]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.

Verse number: 45

أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُمْ مِنْ مَغْرَمٍ مُثْقَلُونَ [٤٦]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?

Verse number: 46

أَمْ عِنْدَهُمُ الْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ [٤٧]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?

Verse number: 47

فَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُنْ كَصَاحِبِ الْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ [٤٨]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muhammad], and be not like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed.

Verse number: 48

لَوْلَا أَنْ تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ [٤٩]

Translation: English - Sahih International

If not that a favor from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.

Verse number: 49

فَاجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ [٥٠]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

Verse number: 50

وَإِنْ يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ [٥١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."

Verse number: 51

وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِلْعَالَمِينَ [٥٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
